Joint Statement of Over 80,000 Scientists

While the world still struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic, the scientists remind about the upcoming climate crisis. Over 80,000 scientists call for immediate action to protect the surface waters if "humanity wishes to avoid calamitous consequences".

Dr. Piotr Rzymski from the Department of Environmental Medicine PUMS and secretary of the Polish Limnological Society is among individuals responsible for issuing the largest to date statement on climate change. Along with ten other authors, he informs on the statement in the Nature journal.

As indicated, 2021 is one of the last chances to take a firm and unified action on climate protection. The joint statement of 111 aquatic societies describes the dramatic scale of degradation of surface waters, warns against their consequences for humankind, and urges for immediate action to prevent further damage of aquatic ecosystems induced by climate change. The 4-page statement is accompanied by 22-pages of scientific peer-reviewed literature. Its signatories from Poland include the Polish Limnological Society and Polish Hydrobiological Society.

As stated: "If humanity wishes to avoid calamitous consequences for our aquatic ecosystems and humans that depend on them, the time to curb greenhouse gas emissions, sequester greenhouse gasses, and adapt to an already changing climate is now".
