Information regarding epidemiological situation – updated March 10, 2020

Dear Students,

In regards to worries related to current epidemiological situation, with the aim to prevent potential threat and take responsible steps based on scientific information and recommendations from the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate and Ministry of Health, you are asked to accept the following:

  1. Despite confirmed cases of coronavirus in Poland currently there is no ground for a significant  limitation of everyday activity of Poznan University of Medical Sciences, excluding travelling abroad. We ask to be  calm, take rational steps and follow the above recommendations.
  2. Coronavirus is carried by droplet and at the moment there is no vaccine against the virus. It is possible, however, to limit the threat of infection in the same way as in the case of other diseases carried by droplet:
  3. washing hands frequently according to WHO guidelines
  4. covering the mouth and nose while sneezing with bent elbow or a tissue,
  5. refraining from touching the eyes, nose and mouth,
  6. keeping safe distance (at least one meter) from the people who have pulmonary symptoms (cough, runny nose).
  7. avoiding greetings rituals (kissing, hugging, shaking hands)
  8. We recommend that people with symptoms of pulmonary infection, not only with suspected infection with COVID-19, strictly obey the above guidelines, and additionally wash hands with water and soap or disinfect hands with an alcohol-based agent after any contact with pulmonary secretions. According to WHO recommendations people infected with a pulmonary infection should wear masks in public places. Surgical masks are not recommended for healthy people who want to protect themselves against infection.
  9. Coronavirus is especially dangerous for the elderly and people with reduced immunity.
  10. Students who have come back from northern Italy or China within last 14 days are asked to limit their social activity and stay at home for next two weeks. This period of absence, upon agreement from coordinators, will be considered excused.
  11. Above guidelines apply also to PUMS employees and the basis for excused absence at work is a valid doctor’s excuse.
  12. There are no grounds to forbid other students to take part in classes. Their absences due to infection should be excused only on the basis of a doctor’s excuse. We ask students who have pulmonary symptoms and have not travelled to the regions with a high number of reported cases of infection with coronavirus to visit the doctor and verify their health condition. It is especially important in the case of participation of students in clinical classes.
  13. We ask academic teachers to follow up-to-date information related to academic classes on WISUS P website.
  14. People who have recently been to the regions infected with the virus or have had direct contact with such people and at the same time have high fever, cough, dyspnoea or breathing problems are asked to contact Infectious Diseases Ward at the Józef Struś Municipial Hospital in Poznań or District Sanitary-Epidemiological Station (tel. 61 646 78 60, 61 646 78 63). We ask not to go to the doctor on one’s own in such situation, but absolutely ask for special sanitary transport.
  15. We cancel business trips of employees and students of our University to the regions with a high number of reported cases of coronavirus: northern Italy, China, South Korea, Iran, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Taiwan. We ask to cancel such travels at least until the end of April 2020. Business trips to those countries will not be funded by the University.
  16. Since March 3, 2020 we have cancelled arrivals to Poland of students, PhD students and academic teachers from the above-mentioned regions within academic cooperation.
  17. We recommend reasonable limitation of academic exchange and business trips to other countries, according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Since and Higher Education.
  18. According to the guidelines of Chief Sanitary Inspectorate we recommend to cancel any conferences and business events involving medical professionals organized by academic departments of PUMS. However, final decision should be made by the organizer of the event.
  19. We recommend to follow the guidelines of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control related to the prevention against COVID-19 infection.
  20. We kindly ask to carefully follow updated information and recommendations from the Chief Sanitary Inspector and take only steps recommended accordingly.
